Privacy policy
Last updated: November 2, 2026
SchoolFit helps families in the Colorado Springs area learn about high schools. You can use most of it without an account. This page explains what we collect, why, who can see it, and how to get it deleted.
The short version: we collect as little as we can. We don’t show ads, we don’t sell or rent your information, and we don’t track you. We count visits in total, with no cookies, to see which parts of SchoolFit are used.
What stays in your browser
Some things never leave your device. Your browser keeps them (in its local storage) so the site remembers them:
- Your answers to the fit interview, including your child’s first name if you typed one, their grade and interests, and any learning support you said they need.
- Your home location. If you tap “Use my location,” your browser asks first, and we round the point to about 100 meters (about a city block) before saving it.
- The schools in your compare tray, and whether you chose to show student background rows when comparing.
- Saved schools and notes, if you save without signing in.
You can erase all of it by clearing this site’s data in your browser’s settings.
What we keep if you sign in
You only need an account to keep saved schools across devices, to suggest a correction, or to use the helper.
- Your email address, to sign you in. If you sign in with Google, Google also shares your name and a link to your profile picture. We use the name as your display name. Otherwise your display name is the part of your email before the “@”.
- Saved schools, with the status you pick (researching, visited, applying or applied) and your private notes. Only you can see these. If you saved schools in your browser before signing in, we move them into your account.
- Suggestions you send: the school and fact, the value you suggest, the source link and any comment, and whether it was approved.
- How much you used the helper each day, counted in “tokens” (pieces of text), so we can keep a fair daily limit. We don’t keep the questions or answers.
A small cookie keeps you signed in. We don’t use cookies for anything else.
The helper
When you ask the helper a question, your conversation is sent to Anthropic’s AI service (the company that makes Claude) to write the answer. If you leave “Use the home location…” checked, the rounded home point goes along so the helper can measure distances. SchoolFit doesn’t store your conversation: it is gone when you leave the page. Anthropic handles it under its own privacy policy (opens in a new tab). Please leave out your child’s name and any health details; the helper doesn’t need them.
The helper can make mistakes. See our terms of use.
Address and ZIP lookups
When you type an address or ZIP code, our server asks the U.S. Census Bureau’s free address lookup where it is. We send only what you typed, get back a point (rounded to about 100 meters) and a short label, and don’t store either one.
Who can see what
- Your saved schools, statuses and notes: only you.
- Your suggestions: you, and the volunteer moderators who review them. Moderators see your display name next to each suggestion, but not your email. If a suggestion is approved, the fact on the site shows its source as “Community submission,” without your name.
- The people who run SchoolFit can see account records when they need to fix a problem or answer a request from you.
Companies that help us run SchoolFit
- Supabase stores accounts and saved data, and sends sign-in emails.
- Cloudflare Web Analytics counts visits and page views in total (for example, how many people opened a school page). It uses no cookies and doesn’t follow individual visitors.
- Netlify hosts the website. Like most hosts, it keeps short technical logs of visits, such as IP addresses and browser types.
- Anthropic writes the helper’s answers. Our own server logs record how much text each answer used, and when something goes wrong they can include a lookup the helper made, such as a ZIP code it searched.
- Google, only if you choose to sign in with Google.
- Resend sends the people who run SchoolFit a daily email about suggestions waiting for review and any site errors. No parent information goes in it.
- Ko-fi and PayPal handle tips through Help cover costs (opens in a new tab). We never see your card or bank details.
When something breaks on our server, we record where it happened and a short technical error message, with no names, emails, notes, questions or locations. We delete these error records after 30 days.
We don’t share your information with anyone else unless the law requires it.
Children
SchoolFit is for parents and guardians. It isn’t meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child under 13 made an account, email us and we’ll delete it.
Deleting your account or data
You can unsave schools and clear notes yourself at any time. To delete your account and everything in it, email us at almostheresy@gmail.com from the address you sign in with. Deleting your account removes your saved schools, notes, suggestions and helper usage counts. Facts that were already approved from your suggestions stay on the site, without your name.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update it here and change the date at the top.
